The town's namesake also played an important role in its development: General George Sibley fought at Gettysburg under General Robert Emancipation Ulysses S Grant and helped win that battle for America. After his death in 1865, his widow donated $5 million to help build schools throughout Kansas City based on her husband's wishes that every child should have access to education regardless of social standing or economic resources (Lincoln).
