The first settler in Winfield was Levi Stout, who arrived in 1854. He and his wife Sarah were the first white settlers in what would become Winfield Township. The first store opened there in 1860. In 1872, John Hinton established a farm there and named it after himself; he also platted the town site. A post office was founded at Winfield on November 3, 1872, by Elisha Denton with Wintancey as his acceptation. Winfield's main industry during its early years was agriculture; wheat, oats, beans and other crops were grown there until about 1920 when manufacturing became increasingly important due to advances in transportation methods and technology. Increased production led to increased traffic congestion along US-59 which made it difficult for people and businesses to get around without going out of their way or driving long distances outside of town limits. One solution was to build expressways through the townsite that connected them more easily but this caused economic problems because people had to drive long distances if they wanted to get things they needed from one side of town to another. One such problem was solved by David Ladd who built Ladd Boulevard/US- 59 Business Loop which ran through Winfield from 1959 until it bypassed the town on Interstate 70 approximately 10 miles south on December 1st 2008 when I-70s expansion into southeast Kansas created new commuting opportunities for residents of Wichita outside of city limits while still allowing access within city limits for those who needed entry into Wichita through its borders only
