Winfield is a small town in south-central Kansas, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Winfield was founded in 1854 and incorporation as a village occurred in 1859. The post office has been in operation since 1860. Winfield is named for General Winfield Scott, 1st Marquess of Wellington, who fought in the Mexican–American War andserved as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War from March 1861 to December 1865. The early residents of Winfield were farmers and their families who supplemented their income by raising chickens, pigs, cattle, or wheat on their family farmssteads just east of present-day downtown Winfield. By 1870, there were over 100 people living inWinfield limits; many had come from surrounding towns and villages that had grown up around Wichita Falls (now Shawnee) because Wichita Falls became an important railroad junction due to its location near Clear Creek Lake and the Kansas River floodplain. In 1871, a group of local businessmen pooled money to build a schoolhouse and began teaching children grades one through four inside it while also building a barn and other outbuildings for use by the school faculty; this was soon followed by a granger’s shop where common items such as flour and eggs could be bought cheaply from locals living nearby or brought downriver from Topeka by wagonloads on horseback during winter months when transportation was available only during summer months when goods could be shipped via boat or train into Wichita Falls proper! When Wahpeton County was organized February 14th1872 under territorial jurisdiction Of Kansas there remained only two towns within its boundaries viz: Hutchinson & Winfields which combined formed Wahpeton County Soil Office District No 2 which included all land west of Main Street on the north side of Kanawha River including today’s core portion of Winfield stretching all the way to State Highway 17 about 6 miles east northeast cornering US 36 across Cedar Creek some 3 miles long! This left Hutchison with no say whatsoever over what happened next within his own County Limits!!! As we know today most if not all land west of Main Street on Kanawha River including today’s core portion WIlliamsburg Township still falls within Hutchison Countylimits even though it now sits squarely withinWinfield limits!!!!!!!!!!!!! What kindof justice can you get when one community has MORE SAY IN CERTAIN EVENTS THEN THE OTHER???

By 1870 most firearm ammunition had been replaced by breech loading cartridges which allowed a gunner to chamber rounds one at a time by striking a primer against the breech face. The use of percussion caps also led to problems with fireballs becoming airborne and exploding on impact with nearby objects
The first cartridge to be developed for the modern military was the .50-caliber rifle round. It was designed in 1857 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and it entered service with the French army in 1860. It was adopted as a standard ammunition by most armies around the world by 1865.
Winfield was founded in 1869 by Capt. John C. Winfield, who named it for his home state of New York. The town rapidly grew and became an important agricultural center in the Kansas Territory. In 1907, Winfield became a city with its own government and mayor. Winfield is located at 38°47′N 91°24′W (38.8667 N, 91.3167 W). It has a total area of 24 square miles (60 km²). The population as of 2010 was 7,981. Winfield is part of the Topeka-Council Bluffs- Hutchinson metropolitan area. Winfield's history can be traced back to 1869 when Captain John C. Winfield founded the town on land that he had purchased from the Wichita people near what is now Topeka, KS. At first, Winfield only conducted trade with nearby Dodge City which was then the largest city in Kansas Territory and also one of the most thriving communities on the continent due to its abundance of natural resources such as coal and cattle but soon began developing into a major agricultural center with many businesses doing business including grocery stores, flour mills, banks and other banking institutions as well as warehouses sufficient to hold crops during winter months while awaiting market prices to increase so they could be sold off during springtime healthy crops became available for sale once again providing economic stability for local farmers until market prices increased or new markets were opened up creating evergreen businesses like Applebee’s being founded here in this rural community today much like when Major General George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle here more than 150 years ago driving out Indian Chiefs all around this valley floor giving us our name today!
Winfield was founded in 1867 by Edwin H. Winfield and his wife, Emmaline. The town was named for General John A. Logan, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as the U.S. Ambassador to Spain. In 1928, Winfield became one of the towns in Kansas City County.
