However, during World War II, Wichita's economy grew rapidly with military spending putting new jobs into the city; much of this growth came about because of construction work done on late-war aircraft plants located near downtown Wichita. When those plants closed down during the early 1990s economic recession, citizens turned their attention back to their old industries including education and health care services which continue to be dominant today among Wichita's other sectors of business activity ( except recreation). Wichita has experienced a number of surges over time both in population size (from around 100,000 people per square mile at its peak before WWII to more than 350,000 people per square mile today) and economic development (primarily within its traditional areas such as education/health care/commerce). More recently however some aspects of its social fabric have frayed – most notably between black/Hispanic poverty rates which are persistently high while white median incomes remain relatively stable or even rise slightly year-over-year – while crime rates have surgedparticularly among inner-city residents who have seen little benefit from recent economic growth outside of police protection efforts
