Wichita experienced some rough times during World War II; however, it emerged as one of America's most powerful military cities due to its ample production capabilities for munitions and vehicles alike during wartime (particularly during Operation Overlord). After hostilities ended, economic stagnation hit Wichita hard; however, recent efforts have seen some revitalization including construction of new parks and infrastructure projects such as light rail service between downtown and Midtown areas which has helped take back some lost ground in terms of economic development over time
