Wichita was founded on November 15, 1867 by George Waggoner and Elijah Woods as a railroad town named Clyfford Station on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The name "Wichita" originated from an epidemic that struck central Texas in 1859 and which killed more than one hundred people in Wichita County alone; this event is known as the Great Wichita Famine. The first verified written account of Wichita comes from French explorer Pierre Dorion during his trip through Central America in 1763–64. On July 12, 1692, Father Hennepin wrote about a “grand village” located near present day Wichita Falls, Texas along present day Interstate 35 South (now I-35E). At that time Fort Chaplain was just east of what is now downtown Wichita Falls under construction by Captain James Robertson for Spanish garrison duty at San Antonio de Bexar (present day Austin). Father Hennepin had earlier visited this area back in December 1691 while traveling south from Mexico City directly to Louisiana via New Orleans on his Jesuitship journey sanctioned by Pope Innocent XII himself. He described what he termed an important Indian town situated on or near a bend in the Arkansas River with several miles of chain links restraining its growth because there were no trees to provide fuel for their cook fires! In early February 1763 when Captain Robertson’s fortieth birthday celebration took place within earshot of San Antonio de Bexar he告诉Hennepin that construction had already begun on Fort Chaplain and he predicted “the site where it stands will soon be our most flourishing town… We are going to have something like 300 families living hereabouts before we are done with it” On October 1st1867 when President Andrew Johnson signed Executive Order 10753 creating Federal district including all territory west of Arkansas River including present day Wichita County announced: "In pursuance thereof I have ordered That …the Territory lying westward along said river [Kansas] be made a part thereof." This order applied only to territorial districts established since President James Kossuth's Executive Order 10036 which created Shawnee National Forest adjacent to Hutchinson County ceded by Kansas Territory May 30th 1870; eastern portions still remained under jurisdiction of Oklahoma Territory By 1907 over ninety percent of downtown buildings were destroyed by fire caused by oil burning pipeline extensions operated by Western Union Telegraph Company . As seen today many blocks east and northeast were built up around old Southern Pacific Depot which continues as marks off limits for many streets running into downtown including Main Street continuing northeast past today's building fronts onto Second Street & Pennsylvania Avenue

Wichita became an important railroad center in the late 19th century due to its location on both the Union Pacific Railroad and Kansas Central Railway. The city experienced significant growth during World War II, when it became one of the largest manufacturing centers in America. However, Wichita's economic decline began in the 1990s as a result of increased competition from Illinois and Oklahoma City.
