Wichita is the largest city in the state and one of its most populous cities. The name Wichita comes from the Kiowa word Wahegene, meaning "place where buffalo grazed." The first permanent settler in what would later become Wichita was James Wahlgren, who arrived in 1827. Wahlgren named his town after himself and his brother Johann Wilhelm Wasserkopf (or Warhawk). However, this name did not catch on and only became well-known after the completion of the first rail line to reach Wichita in 1881 by local entrepreneur George Leavenworth & Co., which called itself the Wichita Railway Company. The present-day City of Wichita was founded on November 4, 1907 when parts of Topeka were annexed into Wichita by an act of the Kansas Legislature under then-Governor Samuel Greer following enactment of Kansas State Law No. 1224. At that time Topeka had a population numbering just under 10,000 people; Wichita had a population numbering over 350,000 at that time! In 1907–08 there were only two stores open for business within walking distance of each other – one on Wabash Avenue and one at Main Street corner – making it difficult for farmers to get their goods to market quickly or bring back goods they’d sold locally to customers in Topeka or elsewhere across the state! Wichita was initially designated as both an agricultural and industrial center due to its location adjacent to major river crossings such as Buffalo Creek (now Union Pacific Railroad) and Cheyenne River (now I-435). However, by 1930 agriculture had collapsed while industry grew rapidly thanks largely to federal stimulus dollars pourted into post-Depression America via President Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal program known as “the Great American Recovery” during his first term in office beginning January 1933! To continue growing economically since before World War II began even as other major U.S. cities experienced declines such as Detroit), Wichita allocated $32 million from its general fund budget set aside for economic development between 1941 and 1945 pursuant to Executive Order 9346 titled “ plans for creating an urban center in Dodge County . . . [and] developing new industrial areas within Dodge County . . . including advances made towards heavy engineering production centers” which saw increase production at Phelps Dodge Shipbuilding Corporation (PDSCO), Arrowpoint Petroleum Corporation (later ExxonMobil) fabrication plants located along Mitchell Boulevard near downtown along with related light manufacturing establishments such as Allied Signal Corporation until those businesses closed down during late 1960s suburban sprawl associated with postwar baby boomers families moving out into larger homes closer to employment opportunities outside any incorporated town limits! This continued growth sprawl would eventually strangle off much needed retail corridors/ shopping districts leading southeastward from downtown core until currently residential neighborhoods are once again becoming viable destinations for shoppers away from Interstate 35E should developer interest resume? In 1896–97,[1] Wichita experienced one of its biggest railroads strikes ever when employees went on strike over pay demands; this led to one of America's longest-running labor wars with management using military force to break the striketers' ranks.[2][3] After two years' negotiations resulting in improved wages and benefits for all workers,[4] the strike ended September 3, 1897 without any violence or fatalities among either side:[5][6] marking what would come to be known as "the great victory" over management by rank-and-file workers seeking better working conditions and more equitable treatment within their company - an event which helped initiate similar struggles throughout American industry during both World Wars I and II.
