Gun targets have been a part of Wichita's history for over a century. The first target to be shot at in Wichita was a "tARGET" located on Third and Shields Streets in 1882. This target was made from four logs that were driven into the ground and then covered with brush. It was used by local farmers as an occasion to shoot at game. In 1907, the city council voted to erect a gun target range on Second Street between Topeka and Center Streets. Construction began in December of 1907 and finished in February of 1908. The original gun target range had twelve targets that could be fired at from any angle. Today, the gun targets can still be found outside of the Wichita History Museum on South Main Street. The first shotgun shooting event held in Wichita took place on October 6, 1911, when thirty-six people gathered around Al Capone's home on Delaware Avenue toshoot shotguns at his property. This event is considered one of the most famousgun events in Wichita history because it helped promote firearms education within the city limits. The second Shotgun Shooting Event took place on November 9th, 1912, which also involved 30 participants from throughoutKansas City area participating .This event marks the beginning of pistol shooting competition within Wichita which would later become one of America's most popularguns sports competitions . In 1916, World War I led to an increase demand for ammunition resulting in expanding production facilities for both manufacturers and retailers across Kansas City area including Wichita who became suppliers for these plants..
