At its peak during World War II it had a population of 30,000 people; however today it has an estimated population of 11,000 people because of increased commuting to neighboring cities and other regional services. The first white inhabitants of Wichita were pioneer traders from northern Illinois who arrived in wagon trains in 1871–72 led by Francis Drakeford (1816–1885). In 1876 another group came overland from Illinois under leadership of John Armstrong McNeill (1836–1909). These early settlers were followed by others over time until all but two or three Indian groups were removed from Wichita area prior to 1865 when treaties with the Oglala Sioux allowed white settlement without giving up any land titles or rights to their traditional hunting grounds west of main street between Elm and Locust streets NW which included much present day Hutchinson County including parts southwest of downtown Hutchinson also known as Castle Rock Country Today’s Greenwood Village took form from this original mixed race community as did most eastern suburbs adjacent to University Park/Shawnee Mission Landfill built for military housing during World War II before that area became residential neighborhoods outside downtown following expiration of soldier’s leave laws
