The history and development of Wichita began with pioneer settlers who arrived in what is now Wichita County in 1821 along the Arkansas River. They were primarily farmers but also developed land for grazing and hunting buffaloes that are today seen as some of Wichita's most important assets. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Hutchinsonville on Buffalo Creek north-west of present-day downtown Wichita; within 10 years, that number had grown to 2200 people and by 1840 it had reached 4500 people . Many early leaders in Hutchinsonville included Captains John Smeaton (founder), Solomon Bogue (founder), Amos Brown (founder), Nicholas Scribner ( founder), Jabez Butler (founder) and Elijah Pritchard (owner). In 1841, Captain Smeaton acquired 640 acres eastward along Buffalo Creek from David Clayton for $100 cash; this acreage would later become part-of present-day Midtown neighborhood . In 1851, after passage of Iowa Territory laws authorizing organization thereof into a county, Hutchinsonville voted to become one such county with captain Smeaton leading its first meeting on February 17th ; degree ceremonies were held at Hutchison's Tavern two days later which marked official incorporation proceedings . On October 24th following passage through territorial legislature granting nationhood to Kansas Territory via Act No 283 – “An act providing for organizing said territory into a more perfect government” – Captain Smeaton signed an oath as clerk corporate officerowitz with other incorporators including Jabez Butler who became treasurer/manager/agent general; thus becoming one among many early leaders instrumental in formulating local government structures for what would become Wichita County 50 years later! The first courthouse built in Hutchinsonville occurred between 1850 &1871 when Judge Ayer erected a log cabin near what is now Main Street northwest corner First Avenue; he served as justice until his death @ age 80 shortly after commissioning new justices to fill vacancies caused by his death! This initial courthouse building served until 1886 when Judge Davenport replaced him with anotherLog Cabin soon followed by a Brick House which served until 1906 when Judge Richardson commissioned architect Juhl to erect an imposing brick courthouse which remains standing today on East Walnut Street just west side Of Elm Street inside current KFC Credit headquarters complex! Within 5 years following incorporation efforts Wichitans enjoyed several magazine articles highlighting their progress due mainly toGenuine Progressivism prevailing at time!
