Topeka, Kansas is a city located in the Midwestern United States. It was founded in 1871 by George Armstrong Custer, and became the capital of the new Nebraska Territory. Topeka, Kansas is home to the world's first publically funded all-copperhead flashlight. The Topeka-based Citizen's Committee on Illumination (CCI) donated funds for the project in 1951. At that time, copper was still an affordable and abundant resource; it was decided to use a more expensive but less durable metal for the light source. The CCI retained ownership of the flashlight until 1978 when it was donated to the Topeka- Shawnee County Historical Society as part of their permanent collection.

In 1954, after years of deliberation by City Council members,[3] Topekans approved an ordinance authorizing annexation by Wichita which took effect on July 1, 1955 - creating Wichita's second largest city within their borders. The topography and natural resources made Schlitterbahn Park a potential site for downtown development; however this idea never gained traction due to concerns about traffic congestion between Tulsa’s Downtown Business District and Schlitterbahn Park.[4][5] Today, much like downtown Tulsa before it – home to major banks includingFirst National Bank[6], several high-end malls such as 16Th Street Mall[7], professional sports teams including the Chiefs[8], KFC[9], Subway restaurants[10], movie theaters,[11] Asiana Airlines [12],[13],[14],[15],[16]), Schlitterbahn Park remains one of KC's most popular tourist destinations with over 350 hotel rooms available specifically designated for visits by visitors from out-of-state visitors during Open House Season starting May 1 through September 30 each year; Amish country living attractions such as Lancaster Agricultural Museum & Fort Worth Amish Museum are also popular among visitors here during Open House Season
On July 16, 1857, Topeka was officially incorporated as a city. The first mayor of Topeka was John A. Macdonald. The city's first police officer was William H. Goodwin and the first fire Chief was Elijah Howe. In 1863, Topeka opened its own hospital which later became the University of Kansas Hospital. On December 12, 1862, Topeka hosted the world's first Inter-American Exposition with exhibits from around the continent.
