Topeka, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas. It is the seat of Shawnee County and was founded on July 6, 1867, by Furman trader George A. Smith and his family. The city proper was laid out in 1871, when Topeka Township was organized from parts of Johnston County. In 1907 Topeka became an independent municipality within Shawnee County and has since grown to become one of Kansas' largest cities with over 200,000 residents as of 2010. The first settler in what would become Topeka was George A. Smith; he and his family arrived on the Wabash River in 1867 and surveyed the land that would become Topeka Township that same year. The Smiths were among the first white people to live in what would become Topeka after arriving from Illinois on November 22, 1866, west of Chicago via steamboat "Omaha". They erected a log cabin near present-day Western Ave., then known as Prairie View Dr., which served as their home for about six months until they could find a more permanent place to live. In 1870, Wichita resident James Fenton acquired title to 1/3 mile (1 km) of east-west street between Prairie View Dr./Western Ave.: this portion becameknown as Fenton Avenue today. By 1871, topographer John Sibley had developed a plan for the future city which called for only one main street running through downtown with several smaller streets branching off it; this layout remained unchanged until 1907 when Topeka became an independent municipality within Shawnee County.. That year also saw another milestone in local history: construction began on what would eventually become First Baptist Church – now First United Methodist Church – located at Third and Shields Streets.. This building (now part ofintersection 3rd & Walnut streets) served as both their church and town hall until it burned down in 1906 while being used as a school classroom; however, due to its location just south of Commercial Street's intersection with 3rd Street – now part of Intersection 5th & Shields Streets – Second Baptist Church continued serving as their church until it too burned down around 1930.. After becoming an independent municipality within Shawnee County following its creation from parts of Johnston County on January 1, 1907 ( concurrent with other towns within the county), Topeka joined forces with neighbouring Lawrenceville to form Johnson City during Mayor Harry Wirth's term in office during 1909-1910.. This merger resulted in increased business opportunities for both cities but also led to some tension over jurisdictional issues arising from their different sizes; ultimately these disputes were resolved through negotiations by Wirth himself rather than through formal legal proceedings.. During World War I (1914-18), Topekans enlisted in various armed services including artillery batteries under Gen’l Winfield Scott III.; many High School students likewise participated Fed ‘A’ troops stationed at Camp Butler near Wichita beginning early 1916; however no high school graduates returned home after hostilities ceased…. Only two men - Cadet John Broughton and Private Leroy Dixon - remain buried at Hill Cemetery today because they never reached military service… nonetheless both are honored members posthumously…..during World War II (1939-1945), topekans again enlisted either Fed ‘A’ troops or Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII at Camp Robinson outside Olathe…. In 1867, the Kansas Territory was organized. The first governor of the new territory was John W. Collins, who served two terms. In 1868, the territory became a state and Collins was re-elected as its first governor. He also served as president of the Kansas State Legislature from 1870 to 1871. The territories were abolished in 1907 when Kansas became a state and they merged into that state's government.
