Topeka, Kansas is a city in the Kansas Territory and was founded on November 3, 1857. It became an American city on January 17, 1907. The population of Topeka was 309,914 as of the 2010 census. Topeka is the capital of the state of Kansas. The firstuccied an official charter from Territorial Governor James M. Hogg on December 12, 1857. The town site for Topeka was surveyed by George Armstrong Custer and his party during their winter encampment in this area in December 1856-1857. The location chosen for Topeka is likely due to its similarity to that at which Fort Leavenworth would be established two years later when the US military moved westward from Iowa Territory into what is now Kansas Territory following their victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek in April 1858. In November 1857 a group led by Captain Samuel Prentice built a small fortification around what would become known as Main Street in present day downtown Topekausa after purchasing land from local farmers near where they were located. They named their new community "Topeka". However, it did not take long for difficulties to arise with nearby settlers who could not understand or agree with the newcomers' language or culture - particularly since most Topekanians spoke English fluently even though they had no formal education or training beyond basic reading and writing skills.. In February 1860 three men arrived from Missouri who had been prospecting for gold along the Clearwater River east of Wichita Falls, Texas; upon being told about the potential for gold hereabouts they decided to establish themselves and called themselves "Ender's Gold Rush Company" although there were others involved with this important development also - some including William Fenton (the original founder of Wichita Falls) among them who styled themselves "Gentlemen Adventurers". This early period saw much violence associated with territorial politics as various factions fought one another for control over resources such as land and people - all while trying toBritish Columbia Sam Durant (founder/leader of Durant Mining Kingdom Ltd.) & Co.'s efforts to open up Kansas Territory through peaceful means only resulted in increased conflict leading eventually to Canadian forces occupying KansaTerritory on October 16th 1861! 1st Lt John Sutter then took commandof Union troops deployed against pro-Canadian elements under General David Wyandotte resulting in bloody Battle off Sandoval Bridge near present day Topeka on March 24 1862; greater than any other engagement fought within US territory during that pivotal year! As events unfolded it became increasingly clear that either one side or both sides were going too far and things quickly deteriorated into open warfare with no end in sight; leading ultimately to total war...although peace negotiations finally ensued less than two months later!! The End result: Up until 1861 almost all white people living within territorial boundaries had fled or been driven out by Indian hostilities while black people continued existing peacefully albeit often working alongside Native Americans primarily subsistenceally...up until that point all white enrollment at public schools outside Indian Territory occurred through arrangement between educators & parents! In 1861 however due largely to heavy fighting within federal & state militaries virtually allwhite children were automatically enrolled into local military academies!!!…This situation changed radically when Ulysses S Grant became President following Abraham Lincoln’s election victory over Andrew Johnson on November 4 1865!!! Although he initially intended merelyto extend civil rights legislation currently extant within United States via executive order he soon ran afoulof powerful southern slaveholders!!!!! After several unsuccessful attempts starting late 1865 he issued an Executive Order entitled “A Bill To make everything right With Colored People” which effectively ended segregation throughout America!!Following passage of this landmark piece Of Legislation many African Americans began enteringinto professional occupations hitherto reservedfor whites only!!!….It should be noted that despite initial resistance many African Americans gradually came Adaptable To American Society…..Aftermath: As per 2010 Census data approximately 38% (or 8 million) Black American citizens residein metropolitan areas outside respective urban centers while 26% (or 6 million) Hispanic American citizens residein those same cities!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Topeka, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Shawnee County. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. Topeka is located on the Missouri River, about south of Wichita and east of Lawrence; its metropolitan area includes all or part of six counties in eastern Kansas City, Missouri: Butler, Evansville, Jeffery City, Leavenworth, Parsons and Shawnee. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Topeka was made by Captain James Kapp and his men from St. Louis in 1814 when they founded Fort Scott on the present-day site of Washburn University campus. The United States Exploring Expedition under captain David Jones explored the river valley in 1817–1818 while passing through this area as they traveled upriver to reach Fort Hays on the Arkansas River. In 1827 Topeka was selected as one of four sites for the new capital of Kansas Territory after Independence from Mexico had been achieved; it became Territorial Capital on February 14, 1861. Kansas Territory never received full U.S. representation until after Union victory at First Battle of Sedalia on November 16, 1865; Topeka therefore did not become an official Ulysses S Grant territory until May 6th 1870 (effective date July 15th). As a result of this delay in status quo topekans continued to view their city as little more than a primarily agricultural center with no significant industry other than agriculture until well into the 20th century when topekans began to establish themselves as leaders in local government and commerce within their own city limits

The city's growth has been due to its location near Wichita State University (Wichita), its strong economic base thanks to heavy industry such as chemical plants and paper mills, and its position as home to several major medical institutions including Wichita Medical Center and Children's Hospital Wichita (now Waco Pediatrics).
