Topeka, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 97,651 as of the 2010 census. Topeka is the capital and largest city of the Wichita metropolitan area. It also serves as the county seat for Barber County and is included within the Topeka–Aldrich, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Topeka" was given to it by General George Armstrong Custer during his 1875 campaign against General John A. McClernand in what was then part of Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). The first permanent settler in Topeka were two brothers, Elijah and David Hogg, who arrived from Vermont in 1854 and founded Hoggsboro on July 24, 1855, just east of present-day City Hall Square. Topeka's official date of incorporation as a town was March 9, 1865; however, it reverted to its original name on November 11, 1872 when Wichita became an independent city under territorial rule following their victory over Fort Riley at Battle Creek that year. On December 12, 1907 – one day before Oklahoma became a state – Topeka's first public school opened with grades 1 through 8 under the name "Duncan School". On January 2nd 1908 second grade students finally had access to public education after years of lobbying by citizens concerned about lack thereof within their own community boundaries. The first High School classes graduated seniors Harry Fenton and Everett Washburn on May 15th 1912 and Mrs Harold Kapp gave her final speech at graduation exercises attended by 100 graduates including Governor Overstreet whose daughter graduated from Duncan that year; Mrs Sarah Latham served as Principal for six years followed by Mrs Alice Reardon until she retired in 1951 In 1911 Topeka's only pharmacy open daily began operations at 218 W Market Street under dispenser Dr John Smedley & Sons Pharmacy which would remain open until 1984 when Walgreens bought out Dr Smedley's interest In 1924 First Baptist Church moved from Main Street into its new building across from American Legion Post #2 which still stands today This church would become known as First United Methodist Church later renamed Emmanuel Episcopal Church . In 1949 First Presbyterian Church also moved into their new building across from American Legion Post #2 which still stands today . During World War II Third Army Headquarters Base Camp operated out of this building providing quarters for soldiers upon their arrival in town after crossing the Missouri River near present day North Central College Finally starting in 1970 ADP built an annex next door to this post officeICC soon vacated along with other downtown buildings due to suburbanization
