By 1889 Topeka had a total population of 2,500 residents; growth continued through annexation by Shawnee County from 1888 to 1912 and then again from 1916 to 1938 as part of the process that led to Kansas becoming an American state. During World War I there were many local military installations including two airfields: One at Bellefontaine Road southeast corner First National Bank Building (later Fort Riley Army Airfield), now Mid-America Center for Aviation Studies & Education; and another at 45th Place northeast corner First National Bank Building (now Hutchinson Regional Medical Center).
