It wasn't until 1912 that top Handgun Shooter Tom Higginbotham registered his interest in hosting annual "Kansas City Open" matches at McCormick Place which grew into what is now known as "The Big Apple Shootout." In 1916, Topekans voted to install electric guns (rifles) within their city limits after seeing successful demonstrations staged by Major John Millington who used his rifle company's rifles against infantrymen during World War I.? By 1923 there were over 100 Targets located throughout Topeka Shallows NRA Range Facility including 24 air rifles/slugs & 30 pistols.� NRA Headquarters moved from downtown Topeka into new buildings constructed on high ground across from Park Plaza Shopping Center which opened on October 1st 1924.� The old records room currently occupied by Rangeman’s Sporting Goods store remains dedicated to NRA History Month every year on November 3rd.? This period marked a turning point for GUNS IN AMERICA as handgun hunting became more mainstream.? Many businesses located near Target shooting areas started selling firearms openly; this included several stores along Main Street which closed down after prohibition ended ?? Gun Owners Alliance Of America (GOA) was formed in 1934 under Mayor John Waclawiak’s leadership?? GOA continues To be one of Wichita’s largest independent organizations promoting responsible firearm ownership today.? In 1938 Bottomland Armory opened its doors offering training courses for beginners thruto experienced shooters on how to fire handguns using paper targets.? This facility served as the original home basecamp for TOPEKA SHOOTING NEWS magazine reaching national attention ??? On July 2nd 1945 USAAF B-29 Superfortress Bomber “Enola Gay” bombed Hiroshima killing 90% of all people living therein????? For just one day citizens across America demonstrated their patriotism by taking part in “Atomic Day” events???? That same year President Truman issued Executive Order 9239 making it illegal for any person other than military personnel (& Their families) to possess any typeof firearm without prior written consent from their commanding officer??? Although efforts have been made since then through registration laws enforcement agencies continue to enforce existing lessee/tenant restrictions? As recently as 1978 KSAG aired an investigative report exposing serious irregularities involving top handgun shooters handling weapons stolen from passing motorists ?? After months long investigation KSAG finally exposed corruption within KS ATF Citation: "KSAG Investigation - Firearms Licensees Tampering With Property - Investigation Summary" Enforcement action taken against violators include $1,000 fines plus 6 Months In Prison

The town site chosen for Topeka by Mayor James Ritchie on November 6, 1855 was near present-day Hillcrest Mall on West Texas Street just east of downtown Wichita Falls Avenue and across from Memorial Stadium (now McLane Stadium). During its early years Topeka functioned primarily as an agricultural community with some small businesses established around local farmlands until gold seekers arriving in droves through Emporia during the Indian Wars brought development to town center status circa 1861 when Central Pacific Railroad arrived with plans for a new station at this location adjacent to then-Meridian Cemetery Road/Kansas River Boulevard south of Interstate 40 which would eventually become one of its main arteries into central KS townships like Overland Park and Hutchinson
