In 1872-1873 local newspapers reported that several revolver manufacturers had fled Missouri after experiencing political pressure from neighboring Kansas towns that banned guns without special permits (similar laws were being enacted in other cities). This inspired topekans to join together in order protect their rights as citizens while also acquiring new arms for protection against future threats from elsewhere in Missouri orKansas

In 1911–12, construction began on Wichita State University's present campus at what is now Main Street and Roosevelt Road across from where KU's current building stands today. This project was funded by local philanthropist James Ralston Purcell Sr., whose family alsoownedPurcell Paper Company which manufactured paper products such as envelopes and labels for food processing plants around the country during World War I and II.. Construction continued through 1913 with classes starting on September 15th followed by full enrollment on October 1st; this set a new record for undergraduate enrollment at Wichita State University!
