In 1872, Topeka gunsmith John J. Nichols began manufacturing firearms in Topeka. His first product was a model rifle called the "Pioneer." In 1898, Nichols moved his company to what is now known as the Topeka Gun Museum building on Main Street inTopeka. Over time, other top Wichita-based manufacturers followed Nichols' lead and established their own factories in Topeka.
