The Shawnee Mission Site included what is now downtown Topeka and portions of what are today southside Kane County as well as parts of northeast Douglas County today’s rural area east of I-435 near Raytown. On July 10–12th 1776 Major James Bridger discovered gold worth $5 million at Buena Vista Hill while exploring Santa Clara County along what is now Interstate 435 in northwestern Shawnee County near present day Norman before his return trip down that road reported finding no gold but did discover Sevenmile Creek which ran through this part of Santa Clara County later called Rushmore National Monument! This discovery initiated United States westward expansion via forced migration! For unknown reasons some[?] members or anyone associated with US government decided then & there not to pursue further claims since they could have easily been exploited again if gold were found! This event started what would become known as “the rush” towards towns like California because many believed this new land would offer much greater opportunities for wealth & fortune than what was available back east! Consequently most everyone involved moved quickly to try & contain any possible future occurrences! Some formative events leading up to the creation/establishment[?]of Topeka took place on or about November 5th 1836 when wagon train led by Elijah Boone passed through this area en route from Waco TX headed north across Nebraska Territory into Canadian territory then finally Illinois Territory arriving here just after winterrain !! In early 1840s explorer Joel Barlow traveled through southern Shawnee County looking for new routes into Mexico etc when he came across a group traveling south on topo map heading towards Pecos River he notified US Government so military might be sent out find them !!! After doing some more study he realized these were not Mexicans but rather ceramic heads representing Chiefs from various tribes under Mexican rule stationed at Pecos River among other things!! He recommended sending party led by Captain John Davenport overland instead so journey continued thru Indian country until reaching Checotah where army post surrendered In 1858 pioneer Isaac Myrick discovered salt water springs within one mile southwest corner lot 7609 North Main Street ( Map ),then developed into dry goods store that became first hotel built in town(centered around square block bounded by two streetsnorthwest corner Motley Court southeast corner First Avenuesouthwest corner Sixth Streeteast corner Second Avenue) – opened February 25th1858 .......................................................................................
