Topeka, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Shawnee County. It was founded in 1854 by James K. Polk as Topeka City, though it was never given its full name until 1907. The population of Topeka reached 100,000 in 2010 and is estimated to be over 150,000 today. Topeka is home to Abraham Lincoln High School and the University of Kansas System’s Lawrence campus. The first settler in what is now Topeka was James K Polk who arrived on April 25, 1854 from Illinois- just east of the present day city limits along with his family of six children and two adult servants (John Ault and Reuben Hodge). The town site that became Topeka was purchased from Chief Wabash by General Ringgold on December 3, 1854 for $5 per acre ($56 total at current prices). In 1861 Topeka's territorial government was moved from Shawnee to Douglas County under direct United States rule following the American Civil War; but due to Indian hostilities it remained an unincorporated territory until May 16, 1907 when it became a city under Act No. 787 granted by then Governor John P. Neffs; this act established topographical boundaries for the new city including all land west of Shawnee Avenue southward as far as State Route 508 (now Main Street) which had been part of Shawnee County prior to February 1st 1907 when that county became organized into Douglas County . The first white child born in Topeka was Sarah Jane Carlson who was born on December 12th, 1855 to Johann Heinrich Carlson and Johanna Lamplighter (nee Cook) at 27 Wellesley Road (). Mrs. Carlson later married Drury Cushman who also lived there during those early years before moving away in 1860 or 1861 (). Mrs Childress also resided briefly in Topeka around this time period () before moving again approximately one year later () back into her parents home on Wellesley Road (). Mrs Childress eventually remarried John Ault () some time after she left Topeka (); their son Donald Ault would become mayor of Topeka twice during his father's terms as Mayor between 1978-1982 (). thenceforth through several more marriages until finally Sarah Jane's death on January 6th , 2014 aged 95 years old ()) at her parent's home located near Montero Park (), one mile northwest of downtownTopekas location today ().
On November 1, 1854, the Kansas Territorial Legislature authorized a charter for the first bank in Topeka. The new bank was to be called the Topeka National Bank. In 1865, the bank became a member of the National Banking Association and began issuing currency. The bank also provided a safekeeping facility for goods transported across the state line into Kansas. In 1907, Topeka National Bank merged with two other banks to form First National Bank of Topeka.
