In 1865 when American forces recaptured all territory south of Iowa Line they burned Topeka with general destruction occurring throughout Confederate held areas across central West Texas. After Reconstruction led by President Johnson RichardsonTopeka quickly bounced back with rapid growth thanks to new investment from entrepreneurs including George Ellsworth Cummings who founded Kirtland Air Traffic Service Company. By 1920 Topekans had reached 100% Anglo majority with only about 10% black residents. While some aspects have changed over time - such as stricter zoning laws which have led to increased housing prices – muchabout downtown remains unchanged today save for some minor renovations.
