Topeka, Kansas is home to one of the most important ammunition manufacturing plants in the United States. Topeka Ammunition Works produces a wide variety of rounds for use in shotguns and rifles, as well as handguns. The company was started in 1892 by six men who pooled their money to buy ingredients for making shotgun bullets. Today Topeka Ammunition Works employs over 1,000 people and makes rounds for over 100 different shotguns and rifles. The early days of Topeka Ammunition were difficult. To get what they needed from suppliers, the men had to go door-to-door selling Bullets (later Ammunition). They did this with built-in advertising - posters reading "Buy ammo here! We know how to make good Ammo!" still hang around today. In 1902, Topeka Armory opened its doors and began producing pistols using American steel bullets instead of imported British ones. It wasn't until 1912 that top quality brass bullets became available from London Cartridge Company; these were used in high end revolvers such as Colt's Model 1911A1 and Smith & Wesson's Model 16 cylinder revolver. In 1938 Topeka Armoury merged with Winchester Arms Corporation (WAC) becoming one of the largest firearms manufacturers in America with production facilities located at both Wichita Falls, Texas (now Wichita, KS) and Mexico City, Mexico (now Monterrey). At its height WAC produced over 250 products including shotguns, pistols and rifle cartridges such as Winchester loads #93 gr., Remington No. 5 shot 8mm Auto., Winchester Defense Nos 221gr., 224gr., etc.. In 1961 WAC merged with Browning Incorporated forming Browning-Arsenal Incorporated which continued production until 1973 when it was sold to Remington Arms Corporation under the name Remington-Ingram Co., Inc.. From 1977 until 1991Browning-Arsenal was part of Marlin Firearms Corporation before being sold again to Stevens Point Arsenal Corp.- now known as ATK Firearms Corporation-. As recently as 1995 ATK Firearms Corp.(today: ATK Ammo) was Still manufacturing ammunition under contract from several government agencies worldwide

The popularity of shotgun rounds led eventually to the development of AK rifles which fired grenades instead of just bullets allowing soldiers on both sides during World War II unrestricted accessto firepower with little loss in personnel life
