In 1854, territorial Governor James Kellar designated portions of present-day Kansas as Indian Territory which included much of what is now Shawnee County. This made trading between the Sioux Indians living within Indian Territory and those living outside that territory difficult so a store called Jardine's Store was established at what is now Topeka to provide goods necessary for life inside Indian Territory as well as trade with other parts of America outside that territory including Missouri (then Kentucky) and Arkansas (then Texas). In 1855, when Stephen Alder becoming Territorial Governor ordered all traders out of Indian Territory he reopened Jardine's Store which continued operations until 1861 when it burned down due to fire damage from an exploding cannonball during Union military maneuvers near Topeka
The Shawnee Nation was a Native American tribe located in present-day Kansas. The tribe is said to have originated from the area around what is now Topeka, Kansas. They were forcibly removed from their land by the United States in 1854 and relocated to Oklahoma. In 1907, they were re-established as a federally recognized tribe within the Indian Territory.
