Shawnee, Kansas is home to the world’s only professional shooting range that specializes in target holders. It has been in operation since 1886 and today it remains a vital part of the community’s firearms education and practice. The tradition of target holders at Shawnee began with Reverend W. H. Caldwell, who donated land for the range in 1886. Today, there are more than 100 shooters from all over the United States who come to use this unique facility every year to hone their skills. The history of target holders can be traced back to 1857 when Captain George Armstrong founded Armstrong Rifle and Pistol Club on a farm near Topeka. This club offered training for riflemen and pistolners until World War I when it disbanded due to lack of resources. After the war, members formed again but this time they decided to focus on handguns instead of rifles because handguns were more popular at that time. In 1921, they changed their name to Shawnee Rifle & Pistol Club and continued operations as an all-male society until 1951 when they became co-ed. In 1954, they added a shotgun range which remained operational until 1978 when it was closed due to budget cuts by then-Governor David Boren (D). In 1986, Reverend W H Caldwell donated land for the new Shawnee Shooting Range which now houses both indoor and outdoor ranges as well as a library/gallery complex complete with a museum dedicated to ammunition development in Shawnee history (see below). The current president of SHRC is Dr Don Snyder with Mr Brent Sawaya serving as treasurer/managing director roles since early 2017( ). Since 1986, SHRC has also become home to one of the most important annual meetings in local firearms education featuring guest speakers from around the United States as well as international visitors! This meeting features educational programming including demonstrations from various types of shotguns and pistols along with awards presentations honoring participants from previous years( ).
