The Shawnee Mission Complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Shawnee Mission Complex is a group of buildings and associated structures used by the religious Chisholm Trail missions from 1824 to 1862 in present-day Shawnee County, Kansas. It includes two churches (one built in 1829 and one built in 1850), a schoolhouse (1824), a hospital (1862), and other buildings and infrastructure used by the Missions during their time as residents of what is now Shawnee County.

Shawnee was a townsite in east-central Kansas, United States. It is now part of the Shawnee Mission District in Topeka, Kansas. The Shawnee people were founded there in 1812 by the Shawnees of the Muskogee Nation. The first permanent settler in what is now Shawnee was James Kapp, who arrived about 1820 and built a log cabin on the site that still stands. In 1824, another pioneer, David Cowen, arrived from Ohio and began building a stockade around his cabin. A few years later he moved to a more permanent location near present day Union City and started growing corn and other crops. In 1830, David Cowen's son Isaac established an adobe trading post at Shawnee; it became known as "Cowen's Fort". By 1840 most of eastern Kansas had been annexed by Oklahoma Territory and Shawnee was included within that territory. In 1847, following the Mexican–American War (1846–48), territorial agent George Armstrong Custer determined that all Indian land south of Rock Island should be ceded to Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo: this included parts of present-day Wichita and Topeka counties in eastern Kansas. As a result of this decision, many native Americans lost their homes and lands in east-central Kansas; some migrated westward into Oklahoma Territory or Illinois Territory before becoming Ute Indians. On July 12, 1861 while under Ulysses S Grant's command during the American Civil War (1861-65), skirmishes took place between Confederate forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest at nearby Pittsburg Landing along present day Route 66 north of Interstate 45/Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (then US 36) east of Topeka; these skirmishes became known as engagements around Pittsburg Landing because these were battles fought near two forts controlled by Forrest - Fort Sumter on Sumter River northwest of Pittsburgh Junction which lay upstream from where US 36 crossed the river; also located adjacent to today's Penn State University campus on I-45 just outside downtown Topeka were two smaller Forrest forts - Fort Donelson northeast off junction US 36 with concurrent County Road DD1 just west side Of Keystone Lake northwest corner OF Keystone Lake east halfway across KeystoneLake fromDonelsonFortDixonAllisonFortressForrestGarrisonKansas
