Shawnee is a small town in Pratt County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was named for the Shawnees who lived there from 1813 to 1847. Shawnee was founded in 1813 by Capt. John Fetterman and his party of about twenty-five white settlers, led by Fetterman's brother-in-law, Isaac Chamberlain. The Shawnees were a Choctaw people and their land had been granted to them by Otoe Chief Wabashwea. In 1818, Colonel James Kimer bought some of the original Shawnee land from the chiefs and laid out a village on it called "Kimer's Landing." In 1830, General George Armstrong sold all of Kansas except Nacogdoches (now Corpus Christi) to Ulysses S. Grant as part of his treaty with Mexico City. In 1836, when Texas seceded from Mexico and became an independent country, Shawnee became part of Texas; it remained so until 1907 when its territory was divided between Kansas and Oklahoma. The first permanent settler in what is now Shawnee was Captain John Fetterman who came overland from Canada in October 1813 along with about 25 others including his brother-in-law Isaac Chamberlain and five Indians guides/drivers: Edward Robinson (Creek), John Myrick (Cherokee), David Rankin (Seminole), Joseph Morse (Mason) Fetterman built a log cabin on what is now US Highway 169 near present day Haskell Junction after finding good farmland east of present day Wichita Falls which he named "Fettermans Prairie." On December 8th 1830 he married Sarah Sprague Hummel daughter of French Canadian trader Pierre Hummel & wife Marie de la Salle at Kimer's Landing while two other witnesses were present: Samuel Atkins & William Browning (both Creek). Sarah Sprague Hummel later married George Armstrong November 5th 1840 at Fort Dodge Indian Agency northeast of Wichita Falls; they had three children: Elizabeth Armstrong February 20th 1840 - May 16th 1865; Augustus ArmstrongNovember 3rd 1850 - January 10th 1865; & Alfred ArmisteadArmstrongOctober 26th1853 - March 14th 1933). Captain John Fetterman died August 15th 1863 aged 67 years while serving as captaincy clerk aboard USS Constitution during her cruise off Cuban coast under President Abraham Lincoln's command.. His son Augustus also served as captaincy clerk aboard USS Constitution during her cruise off Cuban coast under President Abraham Lincoln's command but died young at age 26 years old on board USS Constitution on April 12nd 1861 just before she reached Havana Harbor.: Captain John Lackland may have been spelled incorrectly as Jonell Flatterman or Joliet Freeman or one possible spelling could be Joannetta Freeman which means Jonells daughter...Many researchers believe that Captain John Lackland actually did die August 15 1863 aged 67 years while serving as captaincy clerk aboard USS Constitution during her cruise off Cuban coast under President Abraham Lincoln's command but this information has not yet been verified beyond reasonable doubt!

This time they found an abundant water supply and began trading with the Shawnees. The following year François Xavier Lacroix also visited Wichita and found that there were many Lenape people living nearby whom he baptized as Catholics. After some more trading trips in 1801–2 Father Jacques Marquette followed Lacroix to this area and encountered similar Indians to those he had seen earlier among the Osage Nation east of Missouri River. He reported back to France that these Indians spoke a language very different from any known on Earth; thus his work on Plains Indian linguistics began. In 1803 Wm Bryan built a post at Miami village west of Wichita on what is now Glennview Cemetery site; it was later abandoned due to hostilities between Wyandotte County (now Kansas) settlers west of Wichita and Native Americans east of Missouri River. In 1827 James Kapp established Fort Hennepin south of present day Topeka on land then part of Choctaw Nation which became part of Kansas Territory in 1861 In 1850 United States Congress passed act providing for organization of Oklahoma Territory which included most or all current Oklahoma County along with parts or all adjacent counties including Shawnee Hills On November 16, 1907 two major floods happened within days each other in western Kansas destroying crops and homes; both times major UST efforts were made immediately form local communities On May 8th 1921 forces loyal to President Manuel Quezada invaded rural areas around Ottawa County looking for political dissidents while concurrently supporting Mexican Revolutionary War efforts against Spanish authorities This event is generally considered as beginning modern Mexican-American conflict
