Shawnee is a small town in Kansas, located on the banks of the Missouri River. The population was 9,522 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is part of the Shawnee County government and is home to the Shawnee Mission National Historical Park. The first permanent settler in what is now Shawnee was David Arapaho, who lived here from 1798 to 1800. In 1802, Daniel Boone discovered this area and named it for his ancestor Shawneetown in present-day Virginia. The first post office in this area was called Hennepinville because Major General John Hennepin had founded that settlement (now Minneapolis) some miles upstream from where Shawnee now stands. In 1831, Henry Dodge built a log cabin here and started trading with Indians. He soon became one of the most successful land speculators of his time. In 1847, he organized what would become the Wichita Indian Agency which served as a phone line between Cheyenne chiefs and settlers near Topeka and Wichita Falls. This agency also traded goods with other tribes across the Great Plains region; among its many accomplishments were developing irrigation systems for agriculture around Hutchinson (later Topeka), helping to create Wichita State University, and building an ironclad navy shipyard at Portage City on Kawasaki Island which produced cannon for US forces during World War I. In 1854, when Kansas Territory was created out of Oklahoma Territory following its admission into that state as a result of Indian Removal Act of 1830, Shawnee became part of Kansas Territory along with Wacoalitna (present day Wichita), Jenks (present day Junction City), Mission Viejo (present day Santa Fe Springs), Pittsburg (present day Hutchinson) and several other towns including Leavenworth (now Lawrence). During Kansas Territorial days there were no schools in this area; children attending school took classes at local farms or homeschooling programs until about 1870 when rudimentary school buildings began appearing hereabouts through efforts by farmers such as Samuel Robbins which gradually developed into formal schools operated by teachers unions beginning in about 1900%. By 1907 more than 60% of all students attending public schools within Kansas were girls; however enrollment continued to dwindle rapidly due both to increasing enrollments statewide while farm families increasingly sent their children elsewhere for educational opportunities during the Great Depression – only 710 girls attended high school statewide in 1930–1941 compared to over 12,000 boys! A new high school facility opened here in 1951–1952 concurrent with nearby Bob Dole High School; after years of planning by then-Governor Orval Faubus – popularly known as “Mr Hot Rocks” – half-breed son John Fenton designed much ado about nothing 425room building primarily used for general education purposes until it closed down due to lack of students circa 1966/1967 amid statewide realignment effort resultant from military exercises conducted nearby at Yuma Proving Ground! Today only 3rd Floor remains vacant & used mostly for storage… histrionics!!!

Shawnee was first settled by Native Americans in 1795. In 1824, it became a territory of Kansas and was annexed by Oklahoma in 1907. It has been a territorial state since 1907. The area now comprising Shawnee was first inhabited by the Wichita people who lived there from at least 12,000 BCE to 1800 CE. They were replaced by the Coeur d'Alenes around 1800 CE before being displaced again by the Cheyenne around 1836-1839 CE. After that, Shawnee was occupied by various groups until it finally achieved its current form through contact with white settlers in 1854-1855 CE. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Shawnee on July 4th, 1854 when Jameson Auld moved his family from Canada aboard the USS Constitution into what is now Kansas Territory under US flag and called it Shawneetown after his home country of Scotland. The United States acquired land east of Arkansas during the Mexican–American War which included present day Kansas Territory when Mexico ceded Texas to America as part of that conflict along with California and New Mexico following their independence from Spain two years earlier (1848). On November 16th, 1850, Congress passed an act providing for organized government within this new territory including admission of two additional Indian reservations: one near Lawrence (present day Topeka) and one near Pittsburg (later Pittsburg Junction). On December 1st, 1850 representatives from these three reservations met at Council Bluffs to create a provisional government made up primarily of warriors from each reservation plus some settler hangers on or related to Missouri traders active in central Kansas City during this time period known as "The Kaw" or "The People's Party."
