Shawnee is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Shawnee Mission Indians were the first permanent settlers in what is now Shawnee County. They founded the town of Shawnee on the bluffs overlooking the Arkansas River in 1854. In 1871, they founded the city to serve as their new trading post and capital. The original City Hall was destroyed by a fire in 1907 and replaced with a new building that still stands. The name Shawnee was chosen for its location on an Arkansas River bend just east of present-day Wichita Falls, Texas - about from where Topeka stood when it became Wichita's municipal seat in 1861. In 1924, Mayor James Prentice recommended that Shawnee become an incorporated city because he saw great potential for growth there due to its location and infrastructure advantages over other localities within its boundaries. On November 3, 1925, incorporation began and mayor Jerald Wessels presided over its inaugural meeting at which Rufus Bigham was elected mayor (the first African American to hold office in Kansas). During World War II, many businesses within Shawnee closed due to wartime restrictions on business activity; however most reopened after hostilities ended. In 1990, Mayor Bob Cook suggested that Shawnee rename itself "Topeka" after his hometown of Topeka,Kansas which had been renamed "Wichita" following World War I bombings there by Japan

By 1840, Shawnee had a population of 400 residents and was considered one of the fastest-growing towns in Kansas. However, by 1846, Shawnee had gone out of business due to tight competition from nearby Topeka. In that year, Armstrong moved his entire community to Topeka so he could focus on his job as a mail carrier. However, Topeka quickly gained an outsized reputation for commerce and education; by 1850, it had become one of the most important cities in Kansas. As a result of this growth and competition, many businesses closed or were sold off within two decades of their founding. Despite these negative experiences at first hand, Armstrong continued to promote Shawnee through letters home and other means until his death in 1868. His community slowly rebuilt over the next few years until it reached its current size – only 10 people lived there when it formally disbanded in 1896 following World War I – but its legacy remains strong today thanks to its close-knit community spirit and unique history.
Shawnee was a historic Native American town in central Kansas. It is now a ghost town, and the only remaining building from its heyday is the Shawnee Mission Museum.
