Shawnee is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is part of the Topeka– Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Shawnee Mission was founded in 1817 by Major James Neosho and his band of Mormon pioneers. It became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail and was known for its livestock and corn production. In 1872, the town site was platted as Shawnee and it became a commercial center for wheat, cattle, soybeans, and other agricultural products. In 1907, the first post office in Shawnee opened with one letter from Major Neosho. By 1919, there were fifteen post offices in Indian Territory with service to all tribes within it; however, only two of those continued to serve until 1990. The first telephone service began in 1922; by 1930 there were over 100 telephones in Shawnee. In 1933-1934, local resident John Wirth built what is now called "Wichita State University" on a tract of land that had been donated by William Halsey Coolidge Jr., father of Franklin D. Roosevelt (then president). At its inception as Wichita State Teachers College (later Wichita State University), WSU offered undergraduate/ graduate degrees programs in education and business administration; also providing research laboratories for study of natural sciences and engineering. In 1938-1939 WSU merged with Wichita State Normal School (now Wichita State University-Kansas City) to form Wichita State Teachers College–Shawnee which offered undergraduate/graduate degrees programs once again: education; business administration; health science/health professions; social work; law enforcement officer training program (LPT); architecture & engineering management program (AEP); criminal justice& probation services program (CJP). AEP became the first university college south of Chicago to offer a masters degree in architecture & engineering management after offering such a degree since Wesleyan University’s Yale School of Architecture & Engineering had done so more than fifty years earlier! In 1964-1965 AEP acquired Pine Ridge Indian Community College which served as an adjunct college until it closed due to financial difficulties in 1978; nevertheless AEP still offers a master’s degree program known as “Engineering Management Institute” today! The city's history stretches back long before white settlers arrived - Native Americans inhabited this area for centuries before European exploration even made it past the present day Missouri River Valley! On November 7th 1803 President George Washington signed Executive Order 10888 ordering General Clark's Expedition into Indian Territory eastward along what is now called Kansas City Street just outside current day Topeka KS

They were expelled from their original territory by a band of Cheyenne Indians in 1854. The Shawnee built several towns and villages on the lower River Missouri near modern day Topeka. Their chief town was Caddo Mills. The Shawnee also had a trading post at Waco Ferry on the Wichita River. They were forced out of their lands by General James Kansa during his Indian Removal Act of 1856. The Shawnee are today an federally recognized tribe with its own government and ceremonial ceremonies.
Shawnee was laid out in 1817 by Nicholas Bent, who named it for the Shawnee people. The first white man to live in Shawnee was James Armstrong, who arrived in 1819. In 1825, a group of Cherokee Indians from Arkansas founded the town of Topeka and abandoned Shawnee.
