The first European to visit what is now Shawnee was the Frenchman Pierre Le Moyne, who journeyed across this area in 1763. He named the area for his friend and mentor Sacremento, Lord of Manhattan Island. In 1802, US President James K. Polk sent a survey team from Missouri to study Indian Territory; they recommended that Shawnee be included in this territory because it would provide more opportunity for agricultural development and trade with other parts of America. On May 9, 1804, a vote was taken to make Shawnee the county seat of Shawnee County; it was elected by popular vote on July 10th. The first courthouse in town was built on Fourth Street between Main and State Streets in 1855-56; it soon became known as the "Old Courthouse." Shawnee's economy grew rapidly during its early years due to its location close to markets and transportation links with neighboring counties. Agriculture became an importantstay of local economy until around World War II when industry took over.; However agriculture continues to play an important role today with farmers producing crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton and hay along with animal husbandry including livestock farming (livestock production accounting for nearly half of all economic activity), manufacturing (manufacturing contributed about one third of GDP) and tourism ( visitation numbers have grown significantly over recent decades).

Shawnee, Kansas is a small town in thewestern US state of Oklahoma. The population was 1,821 at the 2000 census and it has since shrunk to 914. Shawnee is located on the eastern edge of the Great Plains, bordered by Nebraska on the north and east, Kansas on the south, and Texas on the west. It’s also home to one of only two airfields in western Oklahoma – Tinker Air Force Base. The first European settlers in Shawnee were French fur traders who arrived in 1799. They named their new settlement after a Shawnee village they had seen near present-day Topeka. The first post office was established in 1802, but it was not until 1824 that a school was built in Shawnee. In 1826, a road connecting Shawnee with Wichita was completed. In 1865, when Indian Territory became part of Oklahoma Territory, Shawnee became its capital. In 1907, when Oklahoma voted to become an all-American state (it did not have this option under Mexican rule), Shawne seceded from Oklahoma and joined Kansas as part of that state’s new government. In 1921 Cherokee Nation moved its seat from Phoenixville to nearby Jenks because of rapid population growth there; however, no formal annexation happened until 1946 when Cherokee citizens petitioned for one among various measures proposed duringOklahoma’s “Great Change” period (1925-35). The proposal succeeded and soon all Cherokees living within walking distance of Jenks were annexed into Oklahoma proper as well–a move which ended any claims by some Cherokees still living inside Indian Territory that they could still maintain their autonomy as sovereign nations despite being surrounded by American soil. The name “Shawnee” originated with this incorporation process: local residents called it “the place where we are now sitting down to eat our dinner” due to how easy it would be for them to visit their ancestral villages around Jenks if they ever left town center behind again!
