In 1934, when Kansas passed its first anti-discrimination law as part of its general homesteaders' amendment to the state Constitution, all towns in Decatur County were given automatic incorporation as cities with their own elected officials and budgets within six months of passage of the measure. On July 3, 1934, Wichita's City Council voted 9-0 to annex part of Shawnee so that it could become an even more independent city with its own police department and budget. On November 4th 1920 local farmers organized themselves into what would become known as "The Shrewsbury Farmers Association" to resistances from big business interests promoting grain exports from Kansas during World War I based on ignorant theories about war being fought for bread and butter instead of true national goals like ending conflict between different countries; this group later became known as The Communist Party USA (CPUSA). Aftermath from US entry into WWI led many farmers to move away from home due to high rents/food prices caused by increased agricultural production brought on by war while also facing new competition from industries such as automobiles and textiles due to technological advances at that time. As a result of this economic turmoil some people decided they would rather stay put and fight for their land than leave their homes because there was no guarantee they would ever see their property again regardless if they won't have any children living on them or grandchildren who will inherit THEIR property one day! This mindset would continue until after WWII when most farms were abandoned following mass migrations coming out of WWI across all demographics - white & black former slaves alike - leading many natives who did not flee poverty stricken rural areas outside metro KC (and NM) back into those areas where farm life continued unchanged despite technological advancements making up for lost opportunity during prohibition era

Shawnee was a small town in Kansas that served as the capital of the Shawnee Nation. The town was founded in 1814 by Chiefs Tecumseh, 7th Chief and President James K. Polk, and his wife Sarah Bardon. Shawnee was destroyed by an Indian War raid in 1845, but was rebuilt. The town continued to serve as the capital of the Shawnee Nation until it relocated to Topeka in 1907. The first known contact between Native Americans and Europeans took place near what is now Shawnee on July 14, 1672 when French explorers Pierre Dorion and René-Robert Cavelier landed on the shore of what is now Missouri River at what is today Shawnee Mission Park. In 1763, during Pontiac’s Rebellion, General Marquette discovered the area around Shawnee which became part of fur trader Osage Territory after France ceded it to Spain in 1763 for $15 million dollars. In 1814, Chief Tecumseh led a group of Creek Indians against Spanish invaders at Horseshoe Bend where he killed many Spanish soldiers before being captured and brought back to Oklahoma City as a prisoner. On February 9, 1818, Tecumseh signed an Agreement with United States officials at Fort Gibson that designated him as head of all nations within this area including the Chickasaw Nation located east of present day Tulsa metropolitan area On August 15th 1830 twenty three chiefssigned Treaty No 2 with United States authorities at Muskogee Agency south of Tulsa In 1834 William Blackmore established Fort Gibson along with other Ulysses S Grant military posts throughout Indian Territoryincluding Fort Scott (present day Wichita)and agency buildings were erected thereon In November 1861 Cherokee forces attacked Ulysses S Grant's army outside Independencetown near Defiance By 1865 about 400 Cherokees had moved into Kansas from eastern Tennessee across Arkansas Valley under Union Military command At various points over time various reservations were transferred from Creek people from East Texas/Oklahoma to Kansas including: Fox Run near Topeka; Walnut Grove off Coldwater Creek east of Wichita; Blue Grass off Elk Hills northwest of Topeka; Garden Ridge on Rosebud River northeast of Topeka On January 1st 1870 all these reservations were combined into one enlarged reservation called “Cherokee nation” within executive order approved December 6th 1865 by Abraham Lincoln who said: "All right then gentlemen – let us have our own government" The first tribal chief elected under this new system was John Ross The opening days following American independence saw wide spread violence among Native Americans living westward due to land speculation and competition among white settlers For years afterward Indian Affairs Officials tried unsuccessfully to broker peace treaties between tribes and European colonists through talks or force However no permanent peace settlement could be reached until after World War II When most Native American groups self-descended into obscurity American Indians working with local governments began efforts to revive traditional ways life through cultural programs such as education, art history & archaeology Many important historical events associated with early Indian settlements in Kansas have been documented through research & archaeological excavation however few are included here
