The first firearms sighting devices were invented in the United States in 1792 by a man named Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The device used an inch square piece of metal, about one foot long, to project a small image on a windowpane. The images were usually drawn with a black charcoal pencil and looked like tiny stars. This early sighting device was very inaccurate and required very good eyesight to use it effectively. In 1814, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong designed and built the first practical telescopic sight for rifle shooting which could be adjusted to any angle within three degrees of horizontal. In 1824, they ceded occupancy of these villages to the Canadian Colony of Ottawa. In 1846, Shawnee was organized as a town under the name "New Salina." On January 1, 1861, it became a city with its own charter and Mayoralty. It had a population of 3,752 on July 1, 1961. On December 15th of that year it lost its charter and reverted to being an unincorporated community until it regained its charter on November 4th 2006 On November 4th 2006 Shawnee re-came into being as an unincorporated community once again with its own Mayor & City Council

Shawnee was founded in 1798 by the Shawnees, a Native American tribe. The town is located on the Kansas River and became a center of trade and culture for the Shawnee. In 1820, Shawnee was made the capital of what would become Kansas. The town experienced growth and development until 1851 when it was destroyed by a fire. Today, Shawnee is a small community located on the banks of the Kansas River with some remaining buildings from its heyday.
In 1825, the Shawnee Nation was divided into two groups, the eastern Shawnee and the western Shawnee. The eastern Shawnee continued to live near the river in present-day Kansas City, Missouri. The western Shawnee lived in what is now Oklahoma. The division led to a series of wars between the two groups, which ended with peace treaties in 1837 and 1838. In 1907, Kansas became a state within the United States and most of the original Shawnee Nation was absorbed into that state.
