He noted that though many other towns developed nearby during this time period- such as Topeka and Garden City- Shawnee remained one of the most active communities in central Kansas due to its location at the mouth of the river and access to major commodities such as timber and goods needed for agriculture. After years of development work by local officials and businesses - including construction of two dams which provided power for local mills) -Shawnee emerged as an important commercial center in central Kansas during World War II. From 1941 through 1945, much effort was put into developing defense industries within central KS; these efforts culminated with production at what is now known as Midland-Lincoln National Industrial Park (MLNP). This resulted in thousands jobs being created throughout central KS while also contributing to technological advances that have made KC&M Airlines oneof America's leading airlines today.
