In 1934, The Wichita Eagle newspaper merged with The Shawnee News-Herald making this one of the largest newspapers in Kansas at that time with an editorial staff of over 100 people! In 1865, EasternKansas Coal Company bought 10% of Shawnee's stock for $5,000 dollars which allowed them to build an anthracite coal mine at nearby Rock Hills that operated until 1977 when it closed due to over-investment by its new owners. Roughly one half million people visited Shawnee during its heyday between 1870 and 1930; however this era has been largely overshadowed by more recent development including businesses such as KFC who have located there since before World War II; Wichita State University's international campus which began operations in 1965; as well as major military installations such as Fort Riley and Maytag Chemical Plant all located within walking distance of downtown Shawnee since the early 1900s
In 1879, Shawnee was platted as a town by the United States government. The population of Shawnee began to grow rapidly in the early 1800s, and in 1882, it became a city. In 1907, Shawnee was renamed after Ulysses S. Grant, one of America's most famous presidents.
