It was founded in 1854 by white settlers from Osage County and named for an Indian chief. The first post office in Shawnee was established in 1855, and it remained in operation until it closed in 1925. In 1907, the town became the site of a oil production wellhead on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. The wellhead has been preserved as a museum open to the public. Shawnee is located at (36.919942, -91.645362). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Shawnee had its start as an Indian village called Sacogee on March 7, 1854 by white settler George Hinkle with his family and six other individuals from Osage County[1]. Sacogee was near what is now Topeka and would have had easy access to good hunting grounds due to its location on high ground overlooking Brush Creek[2]. The first school built in Shawnee was probably named after Chief Tecumseh's daughter who died young while attending school at her father's home nearby[3]. By 1860 there were about 40 people living around Shawnee when James Fenton arrived from Illinois with his family[4], bringing new life to what had been an isolated outpost. In 1865 Fenton married Sarah Oldman and began farming around ShawnEE where he built their first house; this house still stands today as part of the Main Street Historic District[5]. In 1870 two more families moved into ShawnEE: John Andrusen with his wife Anna Marie from Minnesota along with twelve children under age 10 and Fenton's brother Julius who also migrated that year[6]; all four families lived within one mile of each other on main square between First & Second Streets then known as “Lackawanna Row” which later became State Street.[7] Between 1870-1920 over 1,000 different families settled here according to historian John Mabee who estimated that up until 1910 only 10% or soof all US population resided within 3 miles of any major city center! Even today some remnants of these pioneer days can still be found including locally grown fresh produce available throughout most weeks during regular grocery store hours! From 1870 thru 1920 most residents engaged primarily agricultural pursuits although several businesses were started such as: wagon making (1875), flour mill (1880), hardware store (1900), druggist (1902), newspaper publisher [8], hotelkeeper [9], telephone installer/operator [10]….and more!! This period saw tremendous growth for both SHawnEE’s business community & population but also great challenges such as constant warfare with surrounding forces including Comanche Indians (& later Kiowas) & headwater flooding resulting from excessive rains caused by El Niño conditions…all leading up to World War II when much OF THE originalRapid City BUSINESSES WENT OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!!! The Shawnee Nation was an American Indian tribe located in present-day Kansas. The Shawnee people were theoriginal inhabitants of that state, and built their first village on the banks of the Great Shawnee River in 1795. The Shawnees successfully negotiated peace with European settlers during the 18th century and formed a political entity known as the federally recognized Wichita Nation in 1871. They lost their federal recognition in 1907, but continue to exist as a Tribe today.
