Shawnee, Kansas is a small town in northeastern Kansas. The population was 1,522 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is part of the Topeka-Alton, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the border of Kansas and Nebraska. The first Shawnee permanent residents were indigenous people who lived along the Missouri River in what is now southeastern Arkansas. They moved to what is now Shawnee County in 1824 as part of a larger migration to east-central Kansas that followed land grants from President James K. Polk to various territorial governments following the Mexican–American War (1846-48). The first white settlers arrived around 1854 and founded a community called Red Bud on Brush Creek southeast of present-day Topeka. By 1865, all but one block of Red Bud had been destroyed by fire caused by Indian miners working for white settlers; this remaining block was used as a schoolhouse until 1898 when it was replaced by an enlarged courthouse built in brick and faced with red sandstone blocks that remain today. In 1881, Shawnee became an official county seat under legislation passed by Governor John J. Anderson after he won re-election as an independent candidate over Democrat David Prentice Hill; at that time, counties were established pursuant to the new state government's plan for partitioningKansas based on racial lines drawn during Reconstruction years when African Americans constituted about 30% of the statewide population (the percentage had increased since then). The original Shawnee courthouse building still stands today near downtown Topeka and houses offices associated with county government including sheriff's office and court system while also serving as a museum open to the public. In 1907, Wichita Falls annexed neighboring Caldwell County which added much needed industry and commerce to northwestern Topeka; however, because Caldwell County was located entirely within Wichita Falls city limits (and not within any county boundaries), Shawnee never gained much development outside its limited borders other than some type of retail outlet or service station operated by Wichita Falls residents until recent times when several businesses have opened up in downtown Topeka adjacent to both courthouse/museum complex and local high schools: Hennepin Hotel & Casino - just across Main Street from courthouse entrance on Elk Avenue - Tower Center - next door on East High Street - Just north of IMAX theater complexes Art District - contains several large art galleries & museums - Denny's restaurant & bar just northeast corner of First Avenue & Elm Street

In 1836, the first school was built near Shawnee and it continued to be used until 1919. In 1907, the town of Shawnee passed an ordinance establishing a business district which would allow for more commercial development within its boundaries. The first store opened in 1909 and until 1959, all commerce within Shawnee took place through this one store. In 1957, the town of Shawneeto became an independent city and then again in 1996 when it reverted back to being a village.
