In 1847, the Kansas Territory was organized. The Territorial legislature passed a bill in February of that year authorizing the purchase of rifles and shotguns by citizens of Kansas. On March 5, 1847, the first rifle sale took place in Shawnee. The sale consisted of twenty rifles and two shotguns for $5 each.
Shawnee is a small town in eastern Kansas, located at the junction of U.S. Routes 36 and 9. Shawnee was founded in 1854 by pioneers from Ohio who named it for Tecumseh, the Shawnee leader who had helped to defeat American forces in the Creek War of 1813. Shawnee also has a library, a Baptist church, and two parks - one with a football stadium and one with a baseball diamond - which are popular tourist attractions.

They were used primarily in the old west and against Native Americans. The first known use of gun choke was recorded in 1847 when a gunman named John Ball attempted to assassinate Ulysses S. Grant during an election campaign. ball placed a metal pipe under Grant's heart and pulled the trigger, but the gun missed its target and struck Ball in the throat instead. This event is often cited as being one of the first firearm homicides. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell purchased two guns with intent to choke Union soldiers at dawn while they slept; however, this plan failed due to American troops timely warning their opposition. The following year saw another attempt by Confederate General Robert Ewell to kill Union forces at Cemetery Hill using a gun choke device; however, this plot too fell through due to American intelligence information leading authorities to suspect that Ewell was only trying to distract his enemies from closer battlefield engagements. Another notable example of gun choke usage occurred on October 14th 1865 when Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot by John Wilkes Booth near Ford’s Theatre – resulting in Booth’s conviction for murder and later execution. At least three other people also died as a result of gunshot wounds inflicted by Booth after he killed President Lincoln (and two others before he was finally apprehended). Shawnee, Kansas is a small town located in Sedgwick County, Kansas. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is one of the few remaining towns in Sedgwick County and has been continuously inhabited since 1854. It was the site of a skirmish on November 15, 1864 between Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army and George Armstrong Custer's Cavalry over control of an Indian camp near present-day Shawnee. The town was founded by citizens of Fort Leavenworth who arrived there in 1854 to help build that fort. The first post office was established in 1855 and the first store opened in 1860. In 1861, General James Halleck appointed John Witherspoon as Postmaster and he served until 1865 when he resigned because he did not want to serve under Confederate General Robert E. Lee. A school district was formed in 1870 which provided education for all children within its boundaries; Shawnee School District #1 became part of the Wichita Falls Independent School District when it merged with Wichita Falls on January 1, 1979. The current mayor is Donny Schmidt and the current City Manager is Dan Whiteley
On November 16, 1854, Kansas became the 28th state in the United States. On December 15, 1861, Kansas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America.
