Shawnee, Kansas is a community located in Shawnee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. In 1867, the Shawnee Nation purchased land east of present-day Shawnee City from the Osage Nation for $1 million. The city of Shawnee was founded in 1887 by residents of Council Bluffs and other towns within Indian Territory west of the Missouri River. A gunsmith named George Haggerty opened a shop on Third Street in downtown Shawnee and began to make firearms consistent with those used by Paleo-Indian Indians. By 1886, Haggerty had become one of the largest firearms dealers in Indian Territory. In 1890, Congress passed legislation creating the Cherokee Nation and giving it all of what is now Oklahoma plus most of Texas and New Mexico. This left Shawnee Tribe with only 2 square miles (3 km2) outside of Wichita Falls, Texas—the tiny incorporated town that lies at its southeastern edge today—and an unincorporated area near modern day Tulsa known as "The Gourd Patch." The tribe's first Chief was Wabash Creek Chief James Covington who negotiated peace treaties with several American reservations during the late 19th century including Standing Rock Sioux Reservation where he served as head chief from 1896 to 1912; Kitinga Dakota Sioux Reservation; and Nakota Sioux Tribe’s Red Earth Casino & Resort Casino near Omaha Nebraska on White Sands Missile Range Treaty land which has been leased to America since 1968. Since 1934 there have been annual Powhatan Gun Show events held at Randall Park in Wichita Falls which features exhibitors from across North America along with weapons demonstrations by local police officers and military personnel from both countries during Hank Reuter’s rifle display featuring World War II Enfield rifles among others exhibiting their prototype firearms made prior to WWII including muzzleloaders dating back to 1794 or earlier!

Shawnee was founded in 1854 by Captain John Fetterman and his party as a wagon stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The first settler in Shawnee was George Hickey and he built a cabin about east of present-day Shawnee on the northeast side of Shaw Creek. A post office called "Shawnee" was established in 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1861, Major General Sylvester J. Grant's Army passed through Shawnee on its way to Fort Riley to help suppress the Kansas uprising. General Grant stopped at our town while en route southward from Council Bluffs to Englewood Prairie where he bivouacked for three days before continuing on his march northward. In 1863, Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Union forces near Shawnee and although outnumbered and outgunned managed to capture several cannons before being driven back by superior Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant that same day near Newtonia Junction north ofpresent-day ShawnEE .
