Shawnee is a small town in Sedalia County, Kansas, United States. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is the home of Shawnee Mission High School and the Shawnee Tribe's only casino. The town also has a public library, a post office, and two businesses: an ExxonMobil station and a Kwik-E-Mart. Shawnee was founded in 1836 by Alexander Cameron Shafer as part of the Shawneetown Treaty with the Wichita people. At first it was called "Hollow Hills." In 1878, when the towns of Haysville and Topeka were merged into Shawnee, its name changed to "Shawnee." It gained city status in 1907. In 1920, it became an incorporated village. In 1970 it became a town again after being blockaded by KS Highway 16 for several years during the Great Plains drought. The original settlers were white men from Kentucky and Tennessee who arrived in 1836 on horseback looking for land to farm or hunt buffalo. They named their new community "Hollow Hills" because they found no water nearby to irrigate their crops or build houses or other infrastructure necessary for civilization. By 1840 they had built some buildings but there wasn't enough space so they moved all their buildings together on top of one another at what is now called Old Hollow Hills Cemetery (now known as Hillcrest Cemetery). A fire destroyed most of these structures in 1845 but not before many settler families built homes around what is now First Avenue and Third Street which still stands today as part of downtown Shawnee's commercial district.. In 1870 James Guthrie purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) near present day Topeka from David Whitestone for $4/acre ($10 per hectare). This property would later become known as Guthrie Ranch due to its proximity to Wichita Falls and early industry development thereabouts.. In 1880 Guthrie married Anna Maria King who came from Hutchinson County, Kansas with her parents while she was 9 years old; this marriage produced six children including future Congressman George Washingtoon (1887-1965), Anna Boyd Guthrie (1907-1982), James Guthrie II (born 1910), Donald Boyd Guthrie (1914-1990), Mildred Boyd Guthrie Bushnell(1917-)and John Fenton Scott(1920-.)). A gold rush began in 1903 when prospectors discovered large quantities of gold along US 66 near present day Topeka but quickly exhausted any potential resources available within driving distance of townspeople living between Wichita Falls and Topeka.. However many residents remained obsessed with finding more distant sources such as significant amounts of gold could be found at Pottawatomie Creek located about 20 miles east where Indian nations once hunted buffalo; however no significant amount ever turned up despite numerous failed efforts over several decades until 1886 when US 6 crossed Pottawatomie Creek into Kansas Territory becoming what is now International Boulevard just south of downtown Shawnee where prospectors finally stopped searchingsuccessfully uncovering any valuable nuggets even though one individual claimed he had struck “a rich vein” worth $5 million by 1906...In fact most estimates put silver ore reserves at only 10%, less than 1%th that amountof all federal mining claims encompassing Phelps Dodge Mining District northwest portion Caldwell County including much older Fort Robinson location whose discovery led directly theretofore controlling interest thenceforward vested primarily with Phelps Dodge Company owning approximately 95%. Indians continued hunting buffaloes through out this area well into next century outdoing whites herein productivity levels resulting ultimately major conflict throughout region culminating circa 1860s Cowboy ranches nearly remaining self sufficient thruout entire Great Plains region

However, one of the earliest and most famous firearm hats was worn by General George Washington while serving in the Continental Army.
