Shawnee, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shawnee was founded in 1854 by frontiersmen from Illinois. The towns of Leavenworth and Overland City were established in later years. Shawnee was platted on April 12, 1854, by John Lawrence and others under the name "Leavenworth." On November 2, 1855, it was renamed "Overland City", after James Overland who had led an expedition to explore the Great Plains in 1846-1847. That same year Shawnee became the seat of Sedgwick County. In 1861 Shawnee's first courthouse burned down; it reopened in 1865 with new building materials donated by local citizens. A second courthouse replaced it on Main Street in 1886. In 1907 Shawnee added a high school which now serves as its main campus; and also built a church and other buildings which are still used today. In 1948 Shawnee became home to K-12 schools when Sedgwick County merged with Newton County to form that area's first district education agency; concurrent with this change Shawnee High School opened its doors for boys only (it continued to be coeducational until 1984). Today's downtown area once again boasts many businesses including banks and restaurants as well as small shops and residences frontsing Main Street NE between First Avenue NE and Second Avenue NE across from Interstate 44/UConn Memorial Hospital – making it one of Wichita’s most active commercial corridors during any given day or night!
