The Shawnee people are an indigenous tribe in Kansas. The Shawnee were the original inhabitants of what is now Shawnee County, Kansas, and the eastern panhandle of Oklahoma. Shawnee is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River and its namesake is a Shawnee chief who led an Indian resistance to white settlers in this area during the 1790s. The community began as a log cabin settlement in 1871 and was named for Shawnee Chief Tecumseh. A post office was established in 1879, and Shawnee remained an unincorporated community until it became part of Clay County on December 14, 1907. On February 14, 1912, Shawnee had its first election as a county seat and remains that location today. Shawnee appears on many place namesakes throughout the United States – from New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee to Texas’ Comal National Wildlife Refuge – but it may be its unique history that makes it so special to locals hereabouts. In fact, one-third of all citizens of Clay County are related to some version or descendant of Native American origins (see Census data below). One such individual is John Custer Jr., better known as Crazy Horse – or “Crazy Horse” for short – who fought with General Alfred Terry against Ulysses S. Grant in 1874 and did not live to see what would become known as America’s greatest military victory ever (the Battle of Appomattox Court House). As such, his story has been told repeatedly through local media hereabouts (including several feature articles published by this paper) over the years; including twice now this year alone! While there are other prominent residents within miles (and even across state lines) of Shawnee proper (notably Fort Riley), few if any entities can lay claim to having played such integral roles within the community during both its early years AND after its incorporation into Clay County! And therein lies one key reason why locals still cherish their memories of those fateful days: because they were truly “ hometown boys”!

Shawnee, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Shawnee were David Black and his wife Deborah (née Parker) who arrived in 1847. They founded the town on the present-day site of Shawnee Mission on April 4, 1847. They named their settlement for General James Hennepin's Creek Indian Removal Act grant to David Black and others in November 1846. The post office was established at Shawnee on March 12, 1851, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 8, 1951. The townsite was laid out by George Aiken and Alfred Sargent under Sections 9 & 10 of Township 36 North [now Shawnee] east of the Canadian River. In 1865 Captain John Denny founded Dodge City upon the residue of his Fort Dodge land purchase from the Sac and Fox Nation after he had been driven from Council Bluffs by United States troops during the Dakota War of 1862-1863. Denny named his new city for General Order No. 3 dated September 20th 1863 which directed all military commanders to transfer all property within their commands to federal Government ownership before October 15th 1863 without giving any notice to local residents or possessions owners. That day Dodge City became an unincorporated community with a post office as its only occupant until it merged with Shawnee on January 6th 1907 when that community also became an unincorporated area with a post office as its only occupant
