In 1907, construction began on what would become one of Shawnee’s most iconic landmarks – the Topeka Capital Building (now known as Topeka State Capitol). It soon became an important center for government operations and served as a model for many subsequent entities within Kansas statewide government. In 1969, it was designated a National Historic Landmark by Congress; it remains one of Shawnee’s most prominent landmarks today.
