Shawnee, Kansas was founded in 1824 by the Shawnee Indians. The town was named for the Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh. The first settler in Shawnee was George Witherspoon. In 1828, the United States bought out the Indian Treaty of 1817 and opened up the area to white settlement. By 1830, there were ten families living in Shawnee and four businesses were active. In 1833, a school was built and in 1840, a post office was established. The population of ShawnEE grew gradually until it reached 300 by 1860. When Kansas became a state in 1861, ShawnEE became its capital and remained so until 1865 when Topeka took over. In 1870, an oil well began production at nearby Rushmore with results that led to increased demand for goods from Oklahoma City and other parts of the Midwest. This led to money being invested in local businesses which stimulated economic development within ShawnEE as well as throughout Central Kansas during this time period. Many new houses were built during this time such as one known as Elmhurst which stood on present-day Main Street near what is now Park Boulevard. In 1907–1908, major floods occurred which caused extensive damage to several settlements including those located along Missouri River near Wichita Falls; these events are considered to have been among the most catastrophic natural disasters in Kansas history (Fowler & Kline). After many years of hard work by various individuals and organizations involved with developing sustainable community initiatives within central Kansas’s floodplain regions since then – particularly through grants administered by both United Way KCUSA (UWCKC) and their predecessor organization People’s Emergency Response Team (PERT), “The Flooding Experience: A History of Disaster Relief” has emerged as a key document chronicling aspects of successful response/mitigation strategies implemented during three separate flash flooding events that struck central KS between 2007-2009″ (Kleinfeldt). Kleinfeldt furthernotes that while “The Flooding Experience” provides valuable insights into both pre-existing planning processes ongoing at UWCKC at that time and lessons learned from past incidents; more importantly it also serves as an important resource for future disaster relief operations specifically tailored towards communities living close to waterways or impacted by flash flooding events – something necessary but often not available without dedicated effort from all levels of government!
Shawnee was the capital of the Shawnee nation in present-day Kansas. The Shawnee tribe controlled this area for more than two centuries, until forced removal by the United States in 1812.
