Shawnee, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Edina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shawnee experienced significant growth following World War II as millions were drawn to Midwestern cities for work in wartime defense industries such as agriculture, construction, transportation and utilities. Many Main Streets were renamed after generals or other military figures during that time period (e.g., Eisenhower Avenue) in tribute to their service to America or their country during wartime times (i.e., George Patton Boulevard). The post-war boom slowed down around 1970 however, due largely to economic recession followed by global recession which took its toll on manufacturing businesses throughout Midwest region
