Shawnee, Kansas is home to the world's first modern ammunition plant. The Ammunition Plant was built in 1871 by George Armstrong Custer and he named it for his hometown of Shawnee, Kansas. At the Ammunition Plant, ammunition was manufactured for rifles, pistols and cannons. Today, the Ammunition Plant remains an important part of Shawnee's history and economy. It is also a popular tourist destination. The Ammunition Plant began production with cannon shot that were brought over from Europe. Over time, other types of ammunition were produced such as rifle rounds and pistol rounds. The Ammunitionplant operated until 1971 when it was closed down due to budget cuts. Today, remnants of the Ammoplant can be seen near downtown Shawnee.

The first settler in Shawnee was George Harkness in 1847. The name Shawnee was derived from the Otoe word "sha-wah" meaning "to speak." A post office called Shawnee was established in 1854, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Shawnee has two high schools: Shawnee Central High School and Keystone High School. In 2009, Keystone became a charter school and now serves students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. One of the most famous residents of Shawnee is singer Neil Young who grew up there and attended Keystone high school before going on to attend college at Wichita State University where he played football for the Wildcats.

The shot putt can was used until the late 1800s when it was replaced by the modern shotgun projectile cartridge. In 1847, Enfield began developing a new round called the .577 case which would become known as the British Pattern rifle round. This round had an improved bullet design that allowed it to penetrate more than 100 yards without causing damage to human flesh or equipment. The British Pattern Rifle became popular throughout Europe during the Napoleonic Wars and helped win many battles for England. When handguns began becoming common in America in the early 1800s, Winchester began development of their own rounds called pistolshell bullets which reached their final form in 1892 with their Model 94 cartridge. This cartridge featured an improved bullet design that allowed handgunners to fire larger rounds with greater accuracy than ever before. Pistolround bullets would continue to be developed into our present day and are still important firearms projectiles today

The Shawnee tribe of Indians lived in present-day Kansas and Nebraska until the early 1800s. The Shawnee were one of the many tribes that fought against the United States during the American Revolution. After the war, most of the Shawnee moved to what is now Oklahoma. Some stayed and began a new culture, while others left for various reasons. In 1851, some of these remaining Shawnee decided to move back to their original land inKansas because they had lost all their other homes in the revolution. Today, there are about 1,000 Shawnee living in Kansas. The Shawnee Creek was named after a group of them that live near its course today. They hunted game along its banks and collected water from springs nearby. As time passed, more and more people started moving into this area and it became known as Shawneetown or simply “Shawneetown”. By 1854, there were around 100 households living hereabouts and business was starting to take off with tanning shops, groceries stores, schools and churches being built soon afterward! Most of what we know about this period comes from oral history interviews conducted by researchers at Wichita State University over 50 years ago. However, due to technological advances now available our understanding has grown quite a bit since then! For example – computer tomography (CT) technology has allowed us to see details not possible before which has helped scholars learn more about life on the frontier at that time! Additionally – digital photography has made it possible for us to study Indian houses from different angles which helps historians understand how they lived! With all these tools at our disposal we can better appreciate how important an active community like this was during those days!
