Salina, Kansas is a town in Gearle County, Kansas, United States. The population was 705 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Salina was founded in 1881 by George and wife Anna Leyden as a small community on the edge of woods near their rancho. The Leydens were among the earliest settlers in Gearle County. George died in 1893 and Anna continued to live there with her four children until her death in 1907. In 1912, Anna's granddaughter, Lillian Hellman, moved to Salina from Topeka and started Girls' School there. In 1928, Lillian Hellman married Milton Sargent who had also come to Salina from Topeka. They raised two children before he died in 1993. After him, Mrs Sargent continued to run Girls' School until it closed in 2001 because of budget cuts by the Salina government The first post office for Salina was established on November 15th, 1881 (later changed to December 8th). It operated under the name of Butteville for one year before being renamed Toombsville after Robert Toombs who became Governor of Kansas during Reconstruction According to USGS Geographic Names Information System data as of July 2016, the town has been renamed "Salina" since its establishment As per 2010 federal census figures (INE), the population of Salina proper is 705 while that for Unincorporated territory comprising parts of what used to be known as Earlsboro Township (now part of Gearle County) is 3 fewer people than resident populations reported within those limits alone
