Salina, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,957 at the 2010 census. Salina is the county seat of Shawnee County. It is part of the Topeka–Council Bluffs, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Salina was established in 1868, and operation lasted until 1901. The current post office building was built in 1907 and serves as the town's municipal center. The present name for the town comes from James Wickersham Salinas who donated land to be its central square. Salina has had a diverse history since it was founded by pioneers around 1868-1869: In 1871 when John Ralston Purcell arrived from Illinois with his family he set up a sawmill on what would become known as "Red River." In 1875 German immigrant Wilhelm Hofer erected an adobe courthouse which served as the town's first courthouse until 1886 when a new courthouse was built by Frenchman Auguste Lajoie. In 1911 gasoline became available for automobiles and businesses began to grow; however, water shortages delayed development until 1915 when local ranchers organized a water project that included construction of wells and reservoirs east of town along Buffalo Creek. With these measures in place developers began to build homesites within walking distance of their businesses or restaurants during this time period; many still remain today including Fritz’s Cafeteria & Grill (now Primitive Pizza), Joe’s Place Barbecue & Chop House (now Red Onion BBQ), and Tom’s Hardware Store (now Tom’s Hardware). A major fire destroyed much of downtown Salina on December 9th 1905 while Christmas shoppers were shopping at Third Street Baptist Church; this event is generally considered to be one of the most catastrophic fires ever suffered in Topeka/Council Bluffs area with $500K lost overall due to insured losses only 2 years later! In 1913 Salina had 4 banks: First National Bank - now FirstMerit Bank - American Trust Company - State bank Of Topeka And Shawnee Co.; Second National Bank - now Mid America Bancorp.; Third National Bank - now Pinnacle West Capital Corporation.- Fourth National Bank closed down before 1910 .
