Salina, Kansas is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is located on the banks of the Salina River and has a population of approximately 9,000. The community was founded in 1887 by settlers from Illinois. In 1907, it became part of Wichita County. In 1930, it became a part of Johnson County. The present day town was formed when the county line shifted eastward following the Oklahoma Statehood Act of 1907. The first settler in what is now Salina was John Dickson who arrived in 1887 and named his land for his Scottish home city of Aberdeen (now Aberdeen, Scotland). After years of discussion between various settlers and government officials about whether or not to name their new community after Aberdeen or another Scottish city (effectively deciding that no one wanted to claim an Aberdeen-branded town), commissioners voted 6-2 to name it Salina after General James Halleck's birthplace on the Illinois side of the Great Lakes – something which most counties at that time had two towns called "Salina" because they were within easy distance of each other (Johnson County being only 3 miles away from Chicago). In 1907, Salina became a part of Wichita County when that county was created out of parts of Johnson and Platte Counties. This change made sense as Salinas' namesake river – also known as "the Salt River" – flowed through both counties. Though initially unincorporated territory outside either county, residents began to form street names such as Halsey ("water") Avenue and Mill Avenue soon after becoming citizens thereof. Though Buchanan Boulevard still exits downtown today as Main Street proper does in older days before its merger with US Highway 36 due south just beyond Interstate 35W), much development took place along US Highway 36 during this time including numerous shopping centers (including what is now Midtown Mall) east off I-35W; professional sports teams like baseball's Wichita Chiefs (now OKC Royals) playing their games at nearby Shawnee Mission Stadium during its heyday from 1935 until 1959; major manufacturing plants like Pohlman Electric Co., Mohawk Paper Products Inc., Armour &Co.; Pioneer Truck Lines handling goods all over central Kansas; as well as many smaller businesses periphery onto US 36 including Jay's Army surplus store operating since 1944 on what is now US Business Park Drive NE adjacent to KFC breasts restaurant across High School Road SE which closed its doors abruptly early last year amidst outcry from local farmers over proposed changes regarding eminent domain - see full article here:http://www1.kansasonlinejournalistgroup dot com/archives/2006/07/salinas-historical-interests
