The land grant allowed for easy annexation by other states asKansas Territory grew larger – ultimately making Salina one of the most heavily populated communities within its boundaries today. During the early years of the 20th century, Salina quickly became one of the most important transportation hubs in northeastern Kansas due to its location on railroad lines that connected Mexico with America's eastern seaboard. Thanks to this connectivity, Salina saw rapid growth during this time – becoming one of the largest towns within its boundaries by 1920. Today, it remains an agricultural community whose residents rely heavily on agriculture as their primary source Of income – accounting for over 60%of their total GDP according to 2009 data.[1] Despite these benefits from its proximity to both Mexico and America's eastern seaboard, however, SalINA didn't escape criticism during this time period for some reason or another? For example: In 1916-1917 local citizens protested against a new road built through their town – arguing that it would ruin their economy and increase congestion on already congested roads near Wichita City.[2] Additionally: In 1922-1923 local businesses unsuccessfully tried to sue local government officials over sewer construction projects that they felt were harmful to their business interests[3]. Still other criticisms came from outside sources: In 1923-1924 federal agents investigating organized crime inside Wichita City discovered evidence that several men who had worked for local farmer John Whelan were involved in organized crime activity throughout Northeast Kansas[4]. These efforts resulted in several convictions and sentencing enhancements against Whelan,[5] which helped further reduce popular support for organized crime within southeastern Nebraska at this time
