Salina, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. Salina is located on the Salina River and is part of the Topeka-Edmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was first settled in 1853 by James McIntosh and his wife Aleta, who named it McIntosh City after themselves. The town became a railroad town in 1885. In 1907, Salina incorporated as a city and still has that name today. The early history of Salina can be traced back to 1853 when James McIntosh and his wife Aleta moved from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania to land which they called "Mcintosh City". They built a home there and started trading with Native Americans for goods such as horses, corn, etc. They also developed an agricultural economy by raising cattle and wheat. By 1860, the population of McIntosh City had increased to 350 people thanks to canal construction which connected the waterways near Fort Leavenworth with Wichita County via Clear Creek. In 1865, John Pritchard arrived in what is now Salina from Eldon Township near Wichita Falls with his family intending to start a farmstead but found only sagebrush and sand dunes available for farming due to recent floods that had destroyed most of Wichita County’s farmland upstream from their settlements (eastern Shawnee Hills). He therefore founded Pritchard Landing on what is now Main Street just east of current day Salina city limits on opposite sides of the river where he erected two houses: one for himself and one for his family before selling all rights to Pritchard Landing in 1870 to John Kappes who renamed it Kappes Ford after himself (today's First National Bank Building). In 1907, when Omaha Railway Company extended its line south from Topeka through nearby Garden Valley into then unincorporated Atchison County (now Osage), parts of present-day Hutchinson County were added making it possible for Omaha Railway Company employees working at its new station at Kappes Ford north of Ashtone/Topeka (later known as Kansas State University) along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard westward from downtown Topeka within commuting distance of many residents living east or west of downtown Topeka including some 400+ school children attending various schools located along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard between Fourth Street NE & Nebraska Avenue NW - future top ranked USDM education institution OU Medical School - well known local business owner Jules Weisman who founded “The Weisman Brothers grocery store”just north side Kappes Ford across Union Pacific Railroad tracks adjacent First National Bank building across 4th Street NE & Nebraska Avenue NW
